Fairfax County is a county in Northern Virginia with a population of about 1,056,000. It’s made up of 395 square miles on 252,828 acres of land about 12 miles west of the Nation’s capital. In Fairfax County, there are 9 districts: Dranesville, Hunter Mill, Providence, Sully, Mason, Braddock, Springfield, Lee, and Mount Vernon.
Fairfax County operates under an urban county executive form of government. The powers of government are in the hands of an elected board of Supervisors made up of 9 members elected by each district, and a chairman elected at large.
In 2010, there are approximately 1,056,435 residents that reside in a total of 394,556 housing units made up of:
- 191,640 single family homes
- 98,789 attached single family homes (also known as condos or townhomes)
- 104,127 multi-family residences
The County boasts over 580,000 jobs, a median household income of $105,241, and lays claim to being the first county in the United States to reach a six figure median household income in 2006. The County has the 12th largest school system in the country and is home to George Mason University, Marymount University and Northern Virginia Community College.
In 2009, the average median market value for a single family detached home was $550,167, and the average rent in an apartment complex was $1375. Condos, townhomes, and single family homes offered for rent are typically priced much higher.
