The snow is all gone but the flooding is back at Riverbend Park.
As the weather gets warmer, the snowmelt upstream and rainfall makes its way downstream, causing the Potomac River to flood in the low spots of the park.
The flooding is worse as the Potomac narrows done near the Falls at Great Falls Park. That’s a great video of the raging river.
With natural visuals and sound effects like that, I might look forward to making the trek to see it live on my next run.
In January, I snapped a few photos of the flooding at that time. This latest round is more severe, but the water level can change virtually overnight.
On Tuesday, my run was cut short by the fact that flooding covered many of the trails close to the water. I tried my luck the next night and was pleasantly surprised to find the water level nearly back to normal, but the trails were washed out with mud and very slippery. The photo to the left shows how easily the trails can turn into small streams, much to the delight of Hank & Otto.
The Great Falls Trailblazers rushed in to tackle the damage caused by the flooding. The image below is a link to their slideshow that shows the damage and their members hard at work.
