Community Description
I was talking with a friend and avid golfer, but he somehow missed all of the hoopla surrounding the change of ownership at the Lowes Island Golf Course. It was on the market for $18 million and sold last year. The buyer arrived with cash in hand. The new owner: Donald Trump. Another buyer was working on a deal but was unable to arrange financing. After closing on the deal, Trump wasted no time in changing the name to Trump National Golf Club Washington, DC, and announcing plans to renovate saying, “When completed, there will be nothing like it.”
According to Trump he wants to bring in the original golf course designer, Tom Fazio, to re-do both Championship courses. Trump hopes to lengthen and widen both courses, and also give the clubhouse and pool a makeover. In 1995, Golf Digest rated the River course as the 5th “Best in State”. In 1997 it had slipped to 7th but remained in the top 10 list of courses across the entire state.
The Lowes Island Golf Course first opened back in 1993 and the River Course opened in 1999. The club is located in the Lowes Island subdivision which is part of the legal subdivision, Cascades. Lowes Island is a community primarily in eastern Loudoun County, but portions straddle neighboring Fairfax County. There are approximately 7000 homes. The golf course and clubhouse take up almost half of the land area of Lowes Island. Some Loudoun County residents at the community use Potomac Falls as their mailing address; others use Sterling. The post office recognizes both town designations as valid. Properties in Fairfax County are located in Great Falls.
The arrival of Donald Trump has sparked renewed interest in the former Lowes Island Golf Club. Many are looking to purchase before membership fees are raised and take advantage of the renovations promised by Trump. The membership fee is currently $75,000 with $600 in monthly dues. That’s sure to rise as Trump looks to take advantage of the greater visibility he’s brought to the community and recoup his investment. Trump added that membership fees will be “going up very substantially over the course of time.”
